Taylor Swift
Taylor Alison Swift was born in West Reading, Pennsylvania, on December 13th, 1989. Her parents, Scott and Andrea, nurtured her love of music from a young age. Swift started taking vocal and acting lessons when she was nine and learned how to play the guitar by age 12. At age 14, she and her family relocated to a town outside of Nashville so Taylor could make her country music debut. Swift's self-titled album, released on October 24th, 2006, when she was 16 years old, shot her to stardom and helped begin her long journey of musical success. Since her debut, Swift has released 10 more albums and four re-recordings of ones her old recording label, Big Machine Records, bought and did not give her the rights to.

In 2023, Swift embarked on her worldwide Eras Tour, which shot her even more into the media spotlight. The tour was a "journey through the musical eras" of Taylor's career, separated into ten acts featuring songs from her albums and several "surprise songs." The tour was an international success, earning more than $1 billion in revenue and becoming the highest-grossing concert tour of all time. Fans who attend the tour often wear sparkly outfits and friendship bracelets to represent Taylor's fashion and the community of "Swifties" she has created. Content created about Eras Tour fashion has gained millions of views across TikTok and other social platforms.

Many celebrities have participated in friendship bracelet-wearing and exchanging, including Joe Locke, Jennifer Lawrence, Selena Gomez, Halsey, Flavor Flav, Paula Abdul, and more.
Swift's worldwide tour is set to end in December and will consist of 152 shows on five continents.

The Tortured Poets Department
Taylor Swift shattered streaming records with her most recent album, The Tortured Poets Department. Released on April 19th, the album was the first in Spotify's history to reach more than 300 million streams in one day. It broke similar records on Apple Music and Amazon Music, becoming the top pop album by first-day streams and the most-streamed album worldwide on the respective platforms. The previous titleholder of Spotify's most-streamed album in a day was Swift's Midnights, released in 2022.

Songs from the album quickly occupied all top 10 spots on the Billboard Hot 100, making Swift the first artist to accomplish this feat twice. Her new tracks currently take up the top 14 slots of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Every song from TTPD is in the top 60 as of May 1st.

Swift announced the album after she received her 13th Grammy at the 66th annual Grammy Awards this past February. The artist noted that 13 is her lucky number, so her acceptance speech was the perfect time to announce new music. She divulged that had she not won the award, she would have announced the album at her Tokyo concert later that night. Swift kept the project a secret for over two years, so it surprised her fanbase and immediately sparked media attention.

Media Promotion
Immediately following the speech, Swift's management team shared the official album announcement on her social media platforms. The post gained 1.1 million likes on X (Twitter) and millions of likes on Instagram. At 2 a.m. on the night of the release, Swift revealed that TTPD would be a double album because she had written "so much tortured poetry." The work would be entitled The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology and contain 15 new songs in addition to the original release's 16.

Leading up to TTPD's release, Swift regularly shared teasers of the music on her socials and promoted special CD and vinyl editions for pre-order. She also updated her socials to a black-and-white theme to coordinate with the album's color palette. Her website underwent the same transformation.

Scavenger Hunts
Swift has a history of hiding messages in her CD lyric books. "In her albums spanning from 'Fearless' to 'Red,' Swift would often capitalize certain letters in the liner notes to form a code — and for '1989,' she did the opposite, where fans were able to decode messages through uncapitalized letters (TODAY). Before her newest release, Swift partnered with social media companies and streaming services to provide digital and physical scavenger hunts. At the beginning of album release week, Apple Music changed its bio on X to inform Swifties that they could decode one word a day by searching through Swift's song lyrics for out-of-place capital letters. The final message was revealed on April 18th: "We hereby conduct this post-mortem." In addition, Spotify hosted a pop-up library event in Los Angeles from April 16th to 18th, with a poetry library representing the record. The library was updated each day to include new surprises. More information about Swift's promotional collaborations can be found here.
YouTube Shorts
Swift partnered with YouTube Shorts to create the #ForAFortnightChallenge, using her new song Fortnight (featuring Post Malone). Because a fortnight is 14 days or two weeks, Swift challenges fans to "share 14 snippets of [their life] in one single Short" with the song "by using remix or adding the official sound." Swift shared her own video of the challenge on her YouTube page. The video features raw, human moments from Swift's life: sewing, baking, exercising, and spending time with her loved ones. The Short has over 88 million views, with thousands of Swifties participating in the trend.
Fan Theories
Fans quickly developed theories about Swift's new album, with many speculating that a 3rd installment of The Tortured Poets Department, or at least a few new songs, will be dropped soon. The following fan analyzed a "mysterious" post from Taylor's marketing team, which she says supports the idea that Swift will release new music on May 3rd, a fortnight after the album became accessible to the public.
